On the Historic U.S. 89

Six national parks, one highway. This is an American road trip you don’t want to miss. Start in Glacier National Park and take in the views of Swiftcurrent Lake, the wildflowers at Logan Pass, and the rapidly receding glaciers that gave this park its name. If you have time, stroll Cedars Nature Trail or catch the first rays of light at Two Medicine Lake. Head south through the heart of Montana into Yellowstone for year-round beauty at Yellowstone Falls. Keep an eye out for animal sightings at Mammoth Hot Springs, and rise early to avoid the crowds and get clear photos of the unforgettable geysers. A little farther south you’ll make your way into Grand Teton with its majestic mountains and the famous Jenny Lake. Detour off the main drag to see some of the park’s best sights, including Schwabachers Landing, roaming bison, and the winding Snake River. Further along U.S. 89 is Bryce Canyon, home to stunning red rock formations. Head to Bryce Amphitheater before sunset to see the rocks come alive. Once the sky is dark you’ll have a clear view of the Milky Way. Follow the rocks into Zion National Park to walk The Narrows and see the canyon from the bottom up. Explore the desert oasis at Emerald Pools–the upper pool is harder to reach, but it’s worth the extra effort. Hike Angels Landing before packing up and making your way to the Grand Canyon. Wake up early to see the sun rise and slowly light up the canyon walls. Break away from the car for a donkey ride along the South Rim. Don’t miss the Grand Canyon Skywalk for knee-shaking views of the Colorado River and the canyon floor beneath you. Horseshoe Bend and Havasu Falls are also great stops for once-in-a-lifetime memories.
